Providing evidence of professional practice

Providing evidence to support declarations about professional practice for renewal of registration

Teachers make legally binding self-declarations about their maintenance of professional practice and continuing suitability to teach when applying to renew their registration. To ensure the integrity of this process, a random selection of teachers will be asked to verify their declarations about maintenance of professional practice. Continuing suitability to teach is verified through a current and satisfactory National Criminal History Record Check.

Keeping records of professional practice

Teachers are required to maintain records of their professional practice in relation to:

  • days teaching, equivalent practice or educational leadership; and
  • hours of standards referenced professional development activities that update knowledge about pedagogy, content and/ or practice.

Evidence verifying days teaching, educational leadership and/or equivalent practice

  • Currency of practice pro forma completed by principal or delegate, employer, business manager or other authorised person
  • Other appropriate evidence e.g. group certificates

Evidence verifying standards-referenced professional development activities

Evidence verifying professional development activities

  • Certificate of attendance or participation
  • Verification by a principal, employer, professional learning co-ordinator or other appropriate school leader of engagement in school or work supported professional development activities
  • Receipts of payment for courses or activities
  • Transcripts of results for courses

To verify that a PD activity relates to the professional standards teachers should keep:

  • a documented reflection on the contribution of a professional development activity to the professional knowledge and practice of a teacher and how it supports student learning; or
  • another form of documented reflection that addresses the professional standards in relation to the PD activity.
