Renewal becomes an annual process
From 1 January 2011 the Institute requires teachers to renew their registration annually. This is a change from the previous five-year renewal period.
- Teachers currently in a renewal of registration period move to annual renewal after the expiry of their five-year renewal period.
- Teachers with a grant of full registration that occurred on or after 1 January 2011 are required to renew their registration annually.
The common renewal of registration date becomes the 30 September.
All renewal of registration expiry dates will be aligning to the 30 September of the year of expiry or the year following expiry. Teachers will be provided with personal correspondence from the Institute concerning this.
Teachers granted full registration after 1 January 2011
Teachers with a grant of full registration from 1 January 2011 may have applied through the evidence based process (Form C), recognised previous teaching experience (Part B) or through mutual recognition (Form E). They will renew their registration annually.
To renew registration they will be required to meet an annual professional practice requirement of:
- 10 days teaching, equivalent practice or educational leadership in the previous twelve months; and
- 20 hours of standards referenced professional development activities that update knowledge about pedagogy, content and/or practice.
In addition to the professional practice requirements, teachers must also satisfy the requirements for continued suitability to be a teacher to be able to renew their registration.
Aligning to a common renewal date of the 30 September
The expiry of the first renewal of registration period after full registration is granted will occur on the following 30 September. This means that the period of renewal will vary according to the full registration date but in most cases will be shorter than twelve months. Therefore, the professional practice requirements to renew are calculated according to the following table:
| Renewal period |
Days teaching, equivalent practice or educational leadership |
Hours standards referenced PD activities
|
| 12–9 months i.e. period begins 1 Oct – 31 Dec |
at least 7 days |
at least 15 hours
|
| 9–6 months i.e. period begins 1 Jan – 30 Mar |
at least 5 days |
at least 10 hours
|
| 6–3 months i.e. period begins 1 Apr – 30 Jun |
at least 3 days |
at least 5 hours
|
| 3 months – 1 day i.e. period begins 1 Jul – 30 Sept |
at least 1 day |
at least 2 hours |
Where a teacher is unable to meet professional practice requirements because the period of renewal is unreasonably short, they should seek advice from the Standards & Professional Learning Branch of the Institute.
