Renewal becomes an annual process
From 1 January 2011 the Institute requires teachers to renew their registration annually. This is a change from the previous five-year renewal period.
- Teachers currently in a renewal of registration period move to annual renewal after the expiry of their five-year renewal period.
- Teachers with a grant of full registration that occurred on or after 1 January 2011 are required to renew their registration annually.
The common renewal of registration date becomes the 30 September.
All renewal of registration expiry dates will be aligning to the 30 September of the year of expiry or the year following expiry. Teachers will be provided with personal correspondence from the Institute concerning this.
Teachers in a five-year renewal period
Teachers who are part of a five-year renewal process will have professional practice requirements that vary according to the year they were granted full registration or their current renewal period. The following table summarises these requirements.
| Year of renewal expiry |
Days teaching, equivalent practice or educational leadership |
Hours of standards referenced professional development activities |
| 2011 |
50 days in the previous 5 years |
75 hours in the previous 4 years
|
| 2012 and beyond |
50 days in the previous 5 years |
100 hours in the previous 5 years
|
In addition to the professional practice requirements, teachers must also satisfy the requirements for continued suitability to be a teacher to be able to renew their registration.
Aligning to a common renewal date of the 30 September
Teachers who have a five-year renewal period that is due to expire will have their registration extended until the 30 September after their expiry date. After this time renewal of registration will become annual with an expiry date of 30 September every year.
When a teacher’s registration period is extended their requirement for renewal of registration does not change. i.e. if the requirement is 50 days teaching and 100 hours PD, this remains the same even though the period of registration is extended.
Teachers can draw on any relevant work and profession development activities they undertake during the five-year period of registration or the extension period to satisfy the renewal of registration requirements.
