You are only able to teach in a school when you registered as a teacher in Victoria holding Provisional registration or Permission to Teach and your name appears of the public register of teachers.
Graduating teachers
Graduating teachers can be approved for provisional registration after their qualification has been completed, and their transcript forwarded to the Institute once awarded by the university.
While you may no longer be attending lectures at the university your qualification will not awarded until the university’s academic awards processes have been completed. The Institute usually receives transcripts for completing students in December and January.
Graduating teachers finishing at the end of the year are generally able to teach at the beginning of the next school year in January. Mid year graduates can teach as soon as their registration is approved and their name is added to the public register of teachers.
Permission to teach
On some occasions a school may seek to employ a student teacher to fill a fixed term vacancy prior to them being eligible for In this instance, both the student teacher and the school must apply for permission to teach using Form D in a joint application. An application fee will be applied to process the second application.
Where this occurs, the submitted Form A will remain on file until the applicant's final transcript has been received, and registration as a qualified teacher can be granted.
As a student teacher, permission to teach as a casual relief teacher cannot be considered.
